Lamp, Bulb & Tube Recycling Services

At commercial Lamp Supplies we are committed to helping you meet the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, or WEEE regulations. To this end we offer two recycling services, both are essentially the same with the exception that they are targeted towards different levels of waste production.

Following is a guide to our recycling services, who might need to use them and how the process takes place.

Any company that produces more than 200kg of electrical and electronic waste per year needs to be registered with the Environment Agency and be given a premises code. If you are unsure whether you need, or already have a premises code you will need to contact them directly. This can be done through their website: http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/subjects/waste/

If you do qualify for a premises code you will need to work out a waste disposal strategy for all lamps, bulbs and tubes that have no filament (these use nasty gases that require careful disposal).

This is where the Commercial Lamp Supplies recycling services come in. We offer two levels of service which are based on the level and types of waste lamps, tubes and bulbs your business generates. The cost of both services include the delivery of the container, collection of the container when full, help with completion of any required paperwork and the safe disposal/recycling of the waste lamps, bulbs or tubes.

First of all there is the recycling tube. This is capable of accepting up to 55 T12 tubes (the fat, 8ft tubes that are 11/2” in diameter). It will also accept any smaller tubes and empty spaces can be filled with small shaped fluorescent tubes.

The second option is the recycling box. This will accept between 150 and 450 T8 tubes (these are 2-6ft in length, so it won’t take the longer T12 tubes). Obviously the number of tubes you can fit into the container depend on the size of those tubes, so you can fit in approximately three times as many 2ft tubes, as you can 6ft tubes. This container also only accepts linear tubes, so you will not be able to put shaped fluorescents in this one.

So the only thing you need to worry about is arranging the collection or exchange of the container when it is full, we sort out the rest.

Wondering what happens once the container is full? Then keep reading.

If you are using a recycling tube it will be collected by a company called Lampcare, their website can be found here: http://www.lampcare.com/, and if you are using a recycling box it will be collected by a company called Mercury Recycling and their website can be found here: http://www.mercuryrecycling.co.uk/tube.htm. If you are local to us (Tavistock, Devon) we may collect the container ourselves as we are a registered waste carrier, we then put those lamps into a huge container at our premises ready for collection by Lampcare.

If your business produces less than 200kg of electrical and electronic waste per year you do not require a premises code, so it is up to you to get the waste lamps, tubes and bulbs to your local government depot, or visit Recolight’s website (http://www.recolight.co.uk/) to find the nearest of their collection points. Generally the local government depot can be found at your local tip, but you are only allowed to take a limited number of tubes here per month, so it would be better to find a Recolight collection point for larger amounts.
