Components

Metal halide lamps have a metal base that allows an electrical connection. They are covered with an outer glass shield to protect the inner components and provide a shield to UV light generator by the mercury vapour. A series of support and lead wires hold the inner fused quartz inside the glass shield. Besides the mercury vapour, the lamp contains iodides or bromides of different metals and noble gas.

Some types have an alumina arc tube instead of quartz
