Usage

Low energy lighting, also called compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), can be used in every part of the home. At present there might be some limitations in installation as the newest low energy bulbs are not dimmable like traditional bulbs. The UK regulations, however, require all new homes must have dedicated low energy lighting.

Installing dedicated low energy lighting means it will not be possible to fit a traditional bulb as the lamp holder has a different type of connector.

Low energy light bulbs can be fitted in the exactly same way as traditional lighting. When turned on, however, they need about 30 seconds to reach full brightness. It’s a complete myth that they need more energy to be turned on and off. If the light is not needed, it is always best to turn the bulb off.
Those bulbs can be fitted in each room of the house. They are exceptionally good in places where they will be left for a few hours, like a living room or hallway. It is also worth considering fitting a low energy lamp in all places where changing the bulbs is difficult. Placing this kind of bulb means it will not need changing as often as traditional bulbs.

On the other hand, placing CFLs in places that require frequent turning on and off, might shorten their life. It is also recommended not to expose them to low temperatures. Placing low energy light bulbs in a cellar, garage or outside is not the best idea as low temperatures might reduce their efficiency. Most CFLs should not be used with dimmer switches or timers. As this industry is developing quickly, manufacturers are working on new types of lamps that will make this possible.

The CFLs come in many shapes, both traditional and stick shaped. The stick shapes bulbs have two or three tubes. The more tubes a bulb has, the more powerful and heavier it is. They are also available in a wide range of brightness, sizes and fitting types. It is possible to find a low energy light bulb for almost all applications.

Low energy bulbs come also in numerous colours. They might be white but also a slightly yellow colour that looks more like daylight. The CFLs light is more subtle and natural compared to the traditional lighting. Apart from white and yellow, they also come in red. This is the best colour to maintain night vision. It may be a good idea to fit this bulb colour in children’s as a night light. Warmer colours could also be used in other bedrooms and in some lamps in living rooms. Watching TV in the sitting room is always best with some light on. While sharp white light will disturb and cause eyes sore, delicate red/orange light bulb will create a relaxed and cosy ambience.

Blue is the colour that is easy for the eyes. It is good for reading, especially for older people. Fitting the blue bulb in the places where we tend to read, such as above the armchair in the living room or main bedroom, is a very good idea.

In the places that require rather strong light, such as kitchen or bathroom, white light bulbs will be the best option. White bulbs produce a soft white light, without glare, shadows and harsh reflections.
Another suggestion for the kitchen is amber bulb as it does not attract flying insects. Amber CFLs might also be fitted in patios and other outdoor areas where insects cause a problem.
Low energy lighting is also produced in dark colours, for special effects.

There is nothing better than natural daylight., but when necessary, using CFL lamps will have numerous benefits. It will give low energy light to each part of the home, saving money and environment. It will light walls and ceilings, floors and furniture, reflecting the natural light. The best effect can be achieved by painting walls in bright colours.
