Absolutely useless in terms of light output they are purely decorative.

Obviously popular in Old World pubs and restaurants but often owners of cottages and older house use them to add to the character of the properties particularly in winter when they seem at their best.

As their name implies they do flicker like a real candle flame, if fact in an old lantern they can look uncannily realistic.
