Ballasts ( often called Chokes) are part of the operating gear for "Discharge Lamps" such as SON, SOX, Mercury and Metal Halide.

This section deals with just the control gear for Sodium Lamps which give an orange light, we have included all the common wattages but if you need other gear please call us as we have a vast range in stock.

Metal Halide lamps, which give a white light, often use "SON" ballast to operate them, be sure to correctly identify your gear and lamp!

Son lamps commonly have these brand names, NAV, NAV-E, NAV-T, LUCALOX, SHP-T, SHP-E, SHX and many variations on these!

If you are in doubt as to what you need please call us and we will be able to help you.

If you have a problem with a SON light first check the bulb, then the Ignitor, then the ballast and finally the capacitor, the ballasts are the most reliable part. They are usually damaged by a failed bulb which if not replaced can harm the operating gear.

This section deals with just the control gear for MERCURY Lamps such as MBFU which give a white light,
We have included all the common wattages but if you need other gear please call us as we have a vast range in stock.

Mercury lamps have very nice simple circuits they give you a much softer white light than a metal halide, they are particularly useful where plastered or white walls are being lit as the metal halide may look too aggressive.

There is no such thing as a metal halide ballast they either run on Son gear or mercury gear you have to know which gear you have in order to select the correct replacement lamp.
Mercury lamps are much more straight forward they are cheap buy and operate which is why they are still very popular in many parts of the world.

Necessary in all discharge circuits except the "Son" where they are not critical.
In "Sox" circuits the connection to the correct position is vital, if in any doubt call us! 01392 446666.
Otherwise you can look at the circuit diagram on the ballast or the ignitor and follow that to make the right connections.

Ignitors are part of a "DISCHARGE" lamps operating gear.
Ignitors provide the initial arc to fire up the lamp, should the lamp fail it will continuously try to start the arc and so ignitors are often damaged by failed lamps that are not replaced quickly!
You can buy the most common ones here on line,
The SN57 does SONS up to 70 watts.
The SN58 does SONS from 100 watts to 600 watts but also
CDMT from 35 watt to 70 watt and
Metal Halide from 35 to 250 watt.
This makes it a very versatile ignitor.
The SN59 is for big stuff 1000 watt SONS an up to 1800 watt metal halide.

Discharge lamps can be "Son", "Sox", "Mercury" and "Metal Halide" so there are many types of ignitor and then they vary according to the wattage of the lamp as well!
